Yemen's Ministry of Youth and Sports Discusses Digital Empowerment with UNESCO

In a significant move towards enhancing digital literacy and media awareness, Nayef Al-Bakri, the Minister of Youth and Sports, engaged in a virtual discussion with Salaheddin Zaki Khaled, the UNESCO representative for the Gulf countries and Yemen and the director of UNESCO’s Doha office, on Tuesday. The conversation centered around the prospects of cooperation in the field of digital empowerment and the upcoming Media and Information Literacy Week scheduled for October 24-31.

Strengthening Partnerships for Digital Literacy

The meeting, attended by Naseem Wasel, Director General of Youth Centers and Science Clubs at the Ministry of Youth and Sports; Aniseh Harfoush, UNESCO’s Communication and Information Sector Officer; and legal affairs officer, Mojeeb Keni, saw Al-Bakri commend the strong relationship between the Ministry and the global organization. He emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation to implement several joint programs, most notably the Global Media and Information Literacy Week.

Al-Bakri expressed the Ministry’s keenness to partner with UNESCO to keep pace with the rapidly evolving digital landscape and to equip users with the necessary skills to identify publicly beneficial information.

UNESCO’s Commitment to Youth Empowerment

Representing UNESCO, Salaheddin Zaki Khaled conveyed the organization’s readiness through its regional office to build an effective partnership with the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Yemen. This collaboration aims particularly at youth work, training young leaders, and creating a distinguished relationship that contributes to exploring new innovative ways to serve young people and strengthen their presence.

This dialogue marks a step forward in bridging the digital divide and promoting media literacy among the youth in Yemen, highlighting the significant role of international cooperation in achieving these goals. The upcoming Media and Information Literacy Week is a testament to the shared commitment of both organizations to empower young individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary for navigating the digital world effectively.

Conclusion

The collaboration between Yemen’s Ministry of Youth and Sports and UNESCO underscores a mutual dedication to advancing digital literacy and media awareness. As the preparations for the Media and Information Literacy Week are underway, this partnership sets a promising precedent for future initiatives aimed at empowering the youth in Yemen and beyond with the competencies required for the digital age.
