Microsoft has issued a warning to companies and organizations about the risks of relying on advanced artificial intelligence models for self-monitoring. The company emphasized that granting intelligent agents extensive permissions to access databases and internal systems could pose significant security risks, even in the absence of malicious intent.
The company explained that the unpredictable nature of certain AI systems might lead to serious errors when these systems execute tasks and access sensitive data independently. This situation necessitates the establishment of separate oversight and security systems to monitor their behavior.
Nadim Abdo, Vice President of Microsoft, stressed the importance of separating AI capabilities from the security systems responsible for controlling them. He pointed out that companies should not solely rely on the developer of the model to ensure compliance with security protocols.
In this context, Microsoft is developing new monitoring tools as part of the “Project Perception.” This initiative includes what are known as “Guardian Agents,” systems designed to monitor the performance of AI agents, detect any unusual behavior, and intervene before potential damage occurs.
The new security framework allows for dynamic access permissions, ensuring that the intelligent agent receives only the minimum necessary permissions to complete its assigned task. These permissions can be reduced or revoked immediately after the task’s completion.
The proposed measures include mechanisms to isolate intelligent agents or restrict their access to data and systems. Additionally, some tasks may require human approval to proceed, and agents can be completely halted when necessary.
Microsoft noted that these efforts occur in collaboration with other tech companies, including NVIDIA, as part of initiatives aimed at enhancing the safety of AI agents and ensuring they remain under control as their use expands in managing sensitive tasks and systems.
The company asserted that the efficiency of AI models alone is no longer sufficient. The next phase requires independent oversight, limited permissions, and effective intervention mechanisms to ensure the safe use of these advanced technologies.
