Meteorological Authority warns of continued heavy thunderstorms affecting 10 provinces in the coming days.
Yemen Braces for Continued Severe Weather Conditions
The General Authority for Civil Aviation’s Meteorological Center issued a warning on Tuesday, cautioning against the continuation of severe thunderstorms and strong winds affecting several Yemeni governorates in the coming days. The daily forecast, informed by satellite imagery, numerical model outputs, upper atmospheric layers, and surface observations, predicts ongoing heavy thunderstorms, some accompanied by hail, across highlands, slopes, and the western coastal plains.
Diverse Regions to Experience Varied Intensity of Rainfall
The center further expects rainfall of varying intensity, including thunderstorms and strong winds, to persist over parts of the deserts, highlands, plateaus, and coasts of the governorates of Al Mahrah, Hadramout, Shabwah, Abyan, and Lahij. Additionally, heavy rains are forecasted for parts of the governorates of Al Bayda, Al Jawf, Marib, Dhale, and Aden. Strong winds raising sand and dust are also anticipated on the Socotra Archipelago, southern coasts, and areas under the influence of thunderclouds.
Safety Warnings Issued to Citizens and Motorists
The National Meteorological Center has advised citizens and vehicle drivers to avoid valleys, water stream paths, and slippery mud roads in areas expected to receive rainfall. Residents are urged to steer clear of electric poles, billboards, trees, and to turn off mobile phones during thunderstorms. The warning extends to the activities that stir sand and dust during thunderstorms and in areas affected by thunderclouds.
Humanitarian Impact of Severe Weather
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on August 11 that heavy rains and floods have resulted in 57 fatalities and 16 injuries across various Yemeni regions over a span of 13 days. This highlights the significant humanitarian impact of the severe weather conditions on the affected areas.
This development calls for heightened preparedness and adherence to safety measures among the Yemeni population, as the country navigates through these challenging weather conditions.
