Lahj Governor Discusses UNHCR Humanitarian Efforts in Yemen
In a significant meeting held on Thursday, Lahj Governor, Major General Ahmed Turki, engaged in discussions with Yasser Waris, the Deputy Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Yemen, focusing on the commission’s humanitarian interventions in various developmental, service-oriented, and humanitarian projects within the governorate.
Expanding Humanitarian Outreach
The comprehensive meeting, attended by key figures including the Secretary-General of the local council in the governorate, Awad Al-Salahi, and the Deputy Governor, Brigadier Abdul Fattah Al-Hujaili, along with leaders from public health, education, social affairs, labor, planning, international cooperation, local water and sewage, electricity, and the executive unit for managing displacement camps in the governorate, highlighted the UNHCR’s significant emergency relief and sustainable efforts. Governor Turki praised the UNHCR’s extensive support to refugees from the Horn of Africa residing in the Khirz area camp in the Al-Madaribah Wa Ras Al-Ara directorate, as well as to the local community hosting the camp.
Governor Turki expressed a keen interest in amplifying the UNHCR’s developmental project programs, particularly emphasizing the importance of the health sector, solar power generation systems, and the efficient preparation for an upcoming workshop aimed at enhancing basic service levels in the camp.
Mutual Goals and Future Collaborations
Yasser Waris, the Deputy Representative, appreciated the shared vision between the Lahj local authority leadership and the UNHCR, encompassing both refugee affairs and the hosting community’s well-being. He highlighted the potential for a forthcoming extensive joint meeting involving the UNHCR and leaders from the governorate’s service sectors, aiming to achieve vital developmental objectives across all sectors.
This dialogue underscores a mutual commitment to improving the living conditions of refugees and the host community in Lahj, reflecting a broader effort to address humanitarian needs through collaborative and sustainable development projects.
