On Sunday, Governor of Lahij, Major General Ahmed Turki, met with a delegation from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Yemen to discuss the distribution of cash assistance to 80,000 families across the governorate. This meeting aimed to establish a clear mechanism for delivering financial support to those in need.
The meeting included key figures such as Ahmed Salama, the registration director at the WFP office, Martha Artherney, the food department director, and Happy John, the deputy program director. They were joined by Awaid Al-Salahi, the Secretary-General of the local council, Dr. Hisham Al-Sakkaf, director of the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, and Omar Al-Sumati, director of the executive unit for managing displaced persons camps in the province.
During the meeting, Governor Turki praised the humanitarian interventions provided by the WFP, emphasizing their importance for the most impoverished families in the region. He stressed the need for the program to include additional families in its future plans, particularly those who have not received assistance in the past.
Governor Turki reaffirmed the local authority’s commitment to overcoming obstacles in the cash distribution process. He highlighted the leadership’s dedication to ensuring that eligible families receive the financial support they need.
Najeeb Al-Sakkaf, the coordinator for the general food assistance project with the WFP in Lahij, explained that the cash assistance initiative resulted from collaborative efforts between the local authority and the WFP. He noted that after finalizing the necessary arrangements, they agreed to process the cash distribution through Al-Kuraimi Islamic Microfinance Bank.
Al-Sakkaf urged families whose names were omitted from the assistance list to submit their complaints at the distribution points. He assured them that their grievances would be addressed and that their entitlements would be reinstated.
This initiative marks a significant step towards supporting vulnerable families in Lahij, reinforcing the commitment of both the local government and international organizations to alleviate poverty in the region.
