Jordan Confirms Monkeypox Case in Non-Citizen Resident

Amman, Jordan – The Jordanian Ministry of Health announced on Monday that laboratory results have confirmed a monkeypox infection in a non-Jordanian individual residing in the country. This development adds to the growing concern over the spread of the virus, which has prompted global health alerts.

Details of the Infection

In a press release, the Ministry detailed that the infected individual is a 33-year-old male who presented with symptoms typical of the infection, including a rash. He is currently in isolation at Al-Bashir Hospitals, where he was diagnosed via PCR testing conducted by the Ministry of Health’s laboratories. His health condition is stable, as reported by the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Not Jordan’s First Encounter

It is noteworthy that this is not the first instance of monkeypox that Jordan has dealt with. A case was recorded on September 8, 2022, and was managed with routine procedures that successfully prevented the spread of the infection and led to the patient’s recovery without complications.

Global Health Emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency last month due to a new strain of the monkeypox virus, marking the highest level of alert. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that over 14,000 cases of this new strain have been recorded in Africa this year alone. The outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has resulted in 548 deaths since the beginning of the year. The MPXV strain has recently been detected for the first time in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Kenya, signaling the virus’s expanding footprint.
