Israel’s Control of 68 Sites in Southern Lebanon: A Growing Source of Tension

Lebanon’s Focus on Ceasefire and Peace Negotiations

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has reiterated the nation’s dedication to ceasing hostilities and concluding the ongoing war. He affirmed that Beirut remains receptive to a peace agreement with Israel; however, this process necessitates addressing Lebanon’s fundamental demands first.

Israeli Presence in Southern Lebanon

In a recent interview, Salam disclosed that the Israeli military currently maintains control over 68 sites in southern Lebanon. This figure represents a marked increase from the mere five sites prior to the outbreak of the recent conflict. He emphasized that ongoing negotiations are centered around Lebanon’s appeal for a clear agenda regarding Israel’s withdrawal from these areas.

Regional Context and Conflict Dynamics

Salam articulated that Lebanon did not instigate this war; rather, it has become embroiled in the intricate struggle between Iran and the United States. This geopolitical conflict carries significant ramifications for Lebanon and the wider region.

In a notable diplomatic advancement, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on April 16 that Lebanon and Israel had reached an agreement on a 10-day ceasefire, effective starting at midnight on April 17. This agreement followed direct negotiations facilitated by Washington, aimed at laying the groundwork for discussions that could lead to a lasting security agreement and peace.

Human Cost of the Conflict

The Israeli offensive against Lebanon, which commenced on March 2, has tragically resulted in 2,679 fatalities and over 8,000 injuries. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing as stakeholders strive to de-escalate tensions and establish a framework for meaningful negotiations.
