Human Rights Watch: Israeli forces have bombed over 500 schools housing displaced individuals in Gaza.

Human Rights Watch Accuses Israel of Targeting Schools in Gaza

Human Rights Watch has accused the Israeli military of conducting airstrikes that have hit over 500 schools in Gaza since the onset of hostilities on October 7, 2023. These attacks have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians and caused significant damage to educational facilities.

Impact on Displaced Palestinians

In a statement released on its official website, the organization highlighted that many of these schools served as shelters for displaced Palestinians. The targeting of these institutions occurs amid a broader military offensive that is destroying the remaining civilian infrastructure in the region. This situation has led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of residents, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis.

Lack of Safe Spaces for Civilians

The statement further emphasized that the airstrikes on schools reveal a troubling absence of safe spaces for the majority of Gaza’s population, who are now displaced. As military operations continue, the need for secure havens becomes increasingly critical.

Call for International Action

Human Rights Watch has called for an immediate arms embargo against Israel and urged the international community to take urgent steps to implement the “United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.” The organization stressed the necessity for global action to halt serious violations against civilians in Gaza.
