Local sources indicate that the Houthi militia continues its extensive extortion campaign across the rural areas of Ibb Province. The militia is compelling farmers and livestock breeders to provide Eid sacrifices for its fighters while imposing hefty fees on livestock traders at the province’s entrances and markets.
According to reports, Houthi leaders have instructed village heads to assess the number of sacrifices required from each village, basing this on the population size. The militia justifies this measure as necessary to support the front lines. However, residents face coercion to fulfill these demands, leading to widespread community resistance and significant discontent. Reports suggest that many of these sacrifices are either redirected to influential militia leaders or sold in markets, further exacerbating the hardships experienced by the local population.
Additionally, Houthi forces have targeted livestock markets in Al-Suhul and Al-Adain, compelling operators to provide sacrifices under duress. Traders report facing financial extortion, with fees imposed ranging from 30,000 Yemeni rials for each cow to 15,000 rials for sheep and goats. These fees are levied under various titles, including customs, improvement, and slaughterhouse fees, significantly increasing the financial burden on traders.
The Houthi militia’s exploitation of social and religious occasions to impose additional fees and levies on both citizens and traders exacerbates their suffering, driving up livestock prices for consumers. Such actions illustrate how the militia manipulates circumstances to achieve illicit financial gains, negatively affecting the community as a whole.
