In a troubling development in Ibb Province, the Houthi militia has shut down two Quran memorization schools, repurposing one of them for use by its armed members. This action has raised concerns among local residents and education advocates.
Local sources report that Harith Al-Nuwaireh, appointed by the Houthi militia as the director of the educational center in Al-Qafr District, closed the women’s Quran memorization school located in the Grand Mosque of Rahab. He confiscated the school’s contents and converted the facility into living quarters for militia fighters.
In addition to the first closure, the militia also shut down another Quran memorization school situated in the Al-Suhbani Mosque, located near the Rahab checkpoint in the same district. Authorities barred female students from attending classes there, further limiting educational opportunities.
Since its takeover in 2014, the Houthi militia has systematically targeted Quran memorization schools across Ibb Province and other areas under its control. The group has a history of seizing educational institutions, converting them into personal residences or centers for promoting sectarian ideology.
This pattern of behavior underscores the ongoing challenges to education and religious freedom in regions affected by the Houthi conflict. Local communities continue to express their frustration and concern over the militia’s actions, which disrupt both educational opportunities and the preservation of religious teachings.
