On Friday, March 27, 2026, heavy rainfall triggered severe flooding in several areas of Taiz, leading to significant human and material losses. The affected regions include Al-Mokha, Mawza, Al-Waziyah, Jabal Habashi, and Maqbana, where both local communities and displaced persons faced the brunt of the disaster.
Casualties and Damage Report
According to an initial report from the Executive Unit for Managing Displaced Persons Camps in Taiz, which the Yemeni News Agency (Saba) obtained, the floods resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals, including women and children. Specifically, nine fatalities occurred in Al-Mokha, while six were reported in Mawza. Additionally, authorities reported that nine people remain missing in the isolated areas of Al-Mokha.
The preliminary statistics indicate that 5,883 families from both the host community and displaced persons suffered damage due to the floods. The destruction affected homes, both partially and completely, along with household items, food supplies, and livestock.
Urgent Need for Shelter and Relief
The Executive Unit emphasized the urgent need for intervention in the shelter sector. They called for the repair or replacement of damaged tents and shelters, as well as the restoration of roofs on affected homes. Furthermore, they highlighted the necessity of providing emergency shelter materials, including blankets, mattresses, tarps, and rain protection tools for the impacted families.
Immediate Food and Water Assistance Required
The report also stressed the importance of delivering immediate food assistance to families that lost their food supplies due to the floods. Additionally, it called for prompt action in the water and environmental sanitation sectors to address sewage overflow and blockages, thereby reducing health risks. Authorities must also work to clear blocked roads and drain rainwater in areas prone to flooding.
Agricultural Rehabilitation and Assessment
The report underscored the need to rehabilitate agricultural lands that were eroded by the floods. It recommended conducting a joint field assessment by specialized humanitarian organizations to accurately determine the extent of required interventions.
