Governor of Hajjah discusses with UNHCR chief support for liberated areas in the province.

Hajja Governor Discusses Humanitarian Support with UN Refugee Chief

In a recent meeting in Aden, Hajja Governor Major General Abdul Karim Al-Sanini met with Mohammed Rafiq Nasri, the head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office. The two officials focused on strategies to support liberated areas in Hajja Governorate and provide essential humanitarian aid to local residents facing dire living conditions exacerbated by the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

Rising Humanitarian Challenges

During their discussions, Al-Sanini highlighted the severe risks faced by the population, noting that over 37,000 individuals endure conditions akin to a blockade. Additionally, approximately 500 internally displaced families from other provinces struggle with increasing vulnerability due to limited resources and difficulties accessing basic services. Pregnant women face life-threatening challenges, as many cannot reach necessary cesarean operations, resulting in tragic outcomes for both mothers and infants. Furthermore, flooding has compounded these issues by destroying homes and further limiting economic resources, leaving local markets and trade virtually non-existent.

Strengthening Local and International Collaboration

Al-Sanini emphasized the urgent need for enhanced cooperation between local authorities and humanitarian organizations. This partnership aims to create an effective response to the pressing needs in Hajja’s liberated areas and alleviate the suffering of the residents. He called on the international community to pay attention to this escalating humanitarian crisis and to mobilize immediate support to improve living conditions and mitigate further risks.

Urgent Need for Healthcare Services

The governor pointed out a critical shortage of secondary healthcare services, forcing many patients, particularly children and mothers, to endure arduous journeys to access medical facilities. He warned that the current situation threatens to worsen the humanitarian crisis, as youth lack educational opportunities and face limited livelihoods.

A Call to Action from the International Community

Governor Al-Sanini urged the international community to respond promptly to this humanitarian disaster in Hajja. He expressed gratitude to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center for their ongoing support to the province.

UN Official Stresses Immediate Response

In response, the UN official reaffirmed the importance of collective efforts to provide immediate assistance that meets life-saving needs in Hajja Governorate. The collaboration between local and international entities will be crucial in addressing the urgent challenges faced by the affected communities.

In summary, the meeting between Governor Al-Sanini and UNHCR’s Mohammed Rafiq Nasri marked a significant step towards mobilizing necessary support for the residents of Hajja, who continue to endure the effects of a prolonged humanitarian crisis.
