Government report: Over 12,000 displaced families in Marib affected by floodwaters.

Over 12,000 Displaced Families Affected by Severe Weather in Marib, Yemen

A government report has revealed that more than 12,000 displaced families in Marib, a governorate in eastern Yemen, have suffered due to heavy rains and strong winds in August. The severe weather conditions have led to 42 casualties, including deaths and injuries.

Rising Death Toll and Widespread Damage

The Executive Unit for the Management of Displaced Persons Camps in Marib, in a recent report, highlighted the aftermath of the disaster. Following the continuous low-pressure system, the death toll has risen to eight displaced individuals, comprising four women, three men, and one child, while 34 others have sustained injuries. The report further detailed that floods and storms have widely impacted the living conditions of displaced families across 111 camps in the Marib governorate, specifically in the districts of Al-Madina, Al-Wadi, Harib, and Rughwan. A total of 3,673 families have been completely affected, with an additional 8,689 families partially affected to date.

Educational and Health Facilities Hit

The natural disaster has also taken a toll on infrastructure, damaging 22 schools—seven completely and 15 partially—and three health facilities. This has directly exacerbated the suffering of displaced families in the camps, leading to significant damage to emergency and temporary shelters, shelter materials, food supplies, and more. The damages extend beyond shelter, affecting essential services such as water, electricity, and healthcare, thereby creating a dire situation that necessitates immediate and concerted efforts for relief and recovery.

Humanitarian Efforts and Ongoing Challenges

Despite the local authority and humanitarian partners’ efforts to address the crisis, many displaced individuals in the camps continue to live in extremely challenging and complex humanitarian conditions. The report mentions that interventions by various partners have only covered 12% of the total needs across all sectors, highlighting a significant gap that urgently requires attention to alleviate the suffering of affected families.

The Executive Unit for the Management of Displaced Persons Camps in Marib has called for increased support to mitigate the hardships faced by displaced families in the camps and the host community. The situation in Marib underscores the urgent need for enhanced humanitarian assistance and support to address the immediate and long-term needs of displaced families affected by the severe weather conditions and the broader conflict in Yemen.
