Germany issues an additional €5 billion in federal treasury bills in a new auction.

Germany to Issue Additional Federal Treasury Bills Worth €5 Billion

The German central bank has announced plans to auction additional federal treasury bills totaling €5 billion in a sale scheduled for tomorrow, Monday. This initiative forms part of the government’s strategy to meet its short-term financing needs.

Details of the Upcoming Issues

The central bank clarified that the auction will not introduce a new issue. Instead, it will reopen two existing issues of non-interest-bearing treasury bills:

  • €2 billion for the first issue, originally launched in January, maturing on December 9, 2026. The current outstanding value stands at €9 billion, with 3 months remaining until maturity.

  • €3 billion for the second issue, first introduced in June, maturing on June 16, 2027. The outstanding value for this issue is €5 billion, with 9 months left until maturity.

Auction Mechanism and Participation Conditions

The central bank emphasized that the €5 billion includes the portion that the federal government may retain. The actual allocation will depend on the accepted bids. Participation in the auction is limited to members of the federal government’s auction group, with a minimum bid value set at €1 million or its multiples.

The bank allows for the submission of:

  • Competitive bids with varying yields, executed at the yield specified in the accepted bid.
  • Non-competitive bids, allocated based on the weighted average yield of the accepted competitive bids.

Nature of Treasury Bills and 2026 Issuance Plan

German treasury bills typically issue at a discount to their nominal value without a fixed periodic interest rate. Investors earn returns from the difference between the purchase price and the nominal value at maturity.

Germany plans to conduct 36 auctions for treasury bills throughout 2026, targeting a total issuance of €176 billion. This figure marks an increase from €134.5 billion in 2025.

The announcement reflects Germany’s ongoing commitment to managing its financial obligations effectively while ensuring robust participation in the treasury market.
