EU and Yemeni Local Authorities Discuss Support and Empowerment
A team from the Ministry of Local Administration, led by Minister Badr Basalma, convened today in the temporary capital of Aden with a delegation from the European Union, headed by Ambassador Patrick Simonnet. The discussions centered on strategies to support and empower local authorities, focusing on enhancing their institutional capacities.
Upcoming Partnership Conference
During the meeting, participants detailed plans for a forthcoming Partnership Conference, scheduled for mid-June, aimed at fostering collaboration between the government and local authorities. Additionally, they considered the possibility of conducting the inaugural meeting of the Support Group for the Strategy in Aden, which would coincide with the conference activities.
Continued EU Support for Yemen
Both parties reiterated the European Union’s commitment to aiding developmental efforts in Yemen. They expressed robust support for governmental programs focused on executing financial and economic reforms aimed at stabilizing the region.
The ministry team expressed gratitude for the EU’s approval to finance the first phase of the National Strategy for Empowering Local Authorities. This initial phase will prioritize training and capacity-building initiatives for local authorities and will be implemented through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
This collaboration is a significant step towards strengthening local governance in Yemen, fostering sustainable development, and enhancing the effectiveness of local administrations.
