Education Minister discusses with Chinese Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires the potential to increase scholarships

Strengthening Educational Ties: Yemen and China Explore New Avenues of Cooperation

In a significant meeting held in Aden, Yemen’s temporary capital, Dr. Khaled Al-Wasabi, the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research, Technical Education, and Vocational Training, and Zhao Cheng, the Acting Ambassador of the Chinese Embassy in Yemen, discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation. The talks centered on increasing the number of scholarships for Yemeni students and the possibility of establishing a Chinese technical institute in Aden.

Commitment to Excellence and Mutual Respect

Minister Al-Wasabi expressed the ministry’s dedication to sending outstanding students to China to benefit from its advanced technological sciences. He praised the academic contributions of Yemeni students in China, highlighting that they published 370 research papers last year. This commitment underscores Yemen’s focus on leveraging international expertise to build its human capital.

On his part, Acting Ambassador Zhao Cheng reaffirmed the strong ties between Yemen and China. He commended the excellence of the 6,500 Yemeni students currently studying in various programs in China. Cheng expressed hope that these students would play a crucial role in Yemen’s reconstruction efforts upon their return.

Language as a Bridge

Further cementing the cultural and educational exchange, Cheng renewed China’s support for establishing Chinese language departments in Yemeni universities. He praised the proactive approach of Yemeni universities, particularly noting the recent inauguration of a Chinese language department at Aden University. This initiative not only enhances linguistic skills but also fosters a deeper understanding between the two nations.

In anticipation of celebrating the 68th anniversary of Yemen-China relations on September 16, Cheng indicated the embassy’s preparations for the event. This milestone symbolizes the enduring friendship and cooperation that have flourished over the decades.

A Future of Collaboration

This meeting between high-level officials from Yemen and China marks a promising step towards strengthening educational and technical cooperation. By increasing scholarship opportunities and exploring the establishment of a Chinese technical institute in Aden, both nations are laying the groundwork for a future where knowledge and skills transfer can contribute to Yemen’s development and prosperity.

As Yemen and China continue to build on their strong foundation of mutual respect and shared goals, the focus on education, research, and technical training emerges as a key driver for sustainable growth and reconstruction in Yemen.
