Development initiatives in Hadramout bolster resilience and food security for over 21,000 beneficiaries.

FAO Initiatives Benefit Over 21,000 People in Yemen's Hadhramaut Governorate

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has announced that more than 21,000 individuals in Yemen’s Hadhramaut Governorate have benefited from extensive development initiatives. These programs aim to enhance resilience and achieve food security in the region. Supported by the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the German Development and Investment Bank (KfW), the initiatives focus on improving traditional irrigation systems, strengthening flood protection, and creating new job opportunities, particularly for displaced individuals, women, and youth.

Infrastructure Rehabilitation and Climate Adaptation

The projects prioritize the rehabilitation of water infrastructure to address challenges posed by water scarcity and climate change, which threaten food security in the area. Additionally, the initiatives include training programs for local communities. These programs aim to promote sustainability and efficient water resource management, with a strong emphasis on integrating women into decision-making processes related to these initiatives.

A Broader Strategy for Economic Recovery

These efforts form part of a larger strategy designed to assist farmers in coping with the impacts of recurring droughts and floods. By improving living conditions and stimulating economic recovery, the initiatives play a crucial role in a country where over 80% of the population faces food insecurity. The FAO’s commitment to these projects highlights the urgent need for sustainable solutions to address the ongoing challenges in Yemen.
