Council member Sultan Al-Aradah discusses local, regional, and international developments with EU ambassadors.

Yemeni Presidential Council Member Discusses Key Issues with EU Ambassadors

Virtual Meeting Addresses Political, Economic, and Humanitarian Concerns

Today, Major General Sultan Al-Arada, a member of the Presidential Leadership Council and Governor of Marib, held a virtual meeting with ambassadors from various European Union (EU) countries. The discussion focused on significant issues of mutual interest between Yemen and their respective nations at local, regional, and international levels.

The meeting included prominent figures such as Gabriel Munuera Vinals, head of the EU mission in Yemen; Gianfranco Petruzzella, Italy’s special envoy to Yemen; and ambassadors from France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Austria, Portugal, Poland, Finland, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Romania, Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Malta, and Cyprus.

Current Situation in Yemen: Political, Economic, and Security Updates

During the meeting, Al-Arada and the EU ambassadors reviewed the latest developments in Yemen’s political, economic, military, and security landscapes. They addressed the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the difficult living conditions faced by many Yemenis due to the decade-long conflict instigated by the Houthi militia, which has received direct support from the Iranian regime. Al-Arada praised the strong Yemen-EU relations across various sectors and acknowledged the EU’s significant contributions to alleviating the suffering of Yemenis in recent years.

Commitment to Peace and Stability in Yemen

Al-Arada reaffirmed the Presidential Leadership Council’s commitment to supporting the efforts of the United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen. He emphasized the importance of achieving a comprehensive, just, and sustainable peace in Yemen, in line with agreed-upon local, regional, and international frameworks. This approach aims to meet the demands of the Yemeni people and restore state institutions. He also highlighted the real threats to the peace process, citing the failure of negotiations and regional and international efforts amid the Houthi militia’s ongoing escalation in the Red Sea and various fronts within the country.

Concerns Over Houthi Influence and Regional Stability

Al-Arada warned against the international community’s continued neglect of the Houthi militia’s attempts to entrench Yemen’s dependency on the Iranian regime. He expressed concern that this dependency could exploit Yemen’s strategic geopolitical position for expansionist ambitions, turning the country into a base for destabilizing activities that threaten maritime security in one of the world’s key trade routes.

EU Support for Yemen’s Leadership Council

In response, the EU ambassadors reaffirmed their countries’ support for the Presidential Leadership Council, led by President Rashad Mohammed Alimi, as well as the Yemeni government. They expressed their commitment to assisting Yemen in implementing political and economic reforms and stabilizing living conditions. The ambassadors acknowledged the Leadership Council’s dedication to facilitating regional and international efforts aimed at achieving comprehensive peace in Yemen.

This meeting underscores the ongoing dialogue between Yemen and the European Union, reflecting a shared commitment to addressing the pressing challenges faced by the Yemeni people and fostering stability in the region.
