Council Member Emphasizes Peace and State Restoration in Meeting with UK Official

In a recent meeting, Sheikh Othman Majali, a member of the Presidential Leadership Council, outlined the council’s primary goal: achieving peace and restoring state institutions. The discussion took place with Stephen Hickey, the Director for the Middle East and North Africa at the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

Addressing Terrorism and Regional Stability

Majali stressed the importance of confronting terrorism, advocating for the classification of the Houthi militia as a terrorist group. He highlighted the need to contain Iran’s influence, which he accused of exporting terrorism and weapons to Yemen and the broader region. This approach aims to fulfill the peace aspirations of the Yemeni people and the international community. Furthermore, he underscored the necessity of strengthening the state’s economic and political institutions. A collaborative strategy with regional and international partners is crucial for effective cooperation across various sectors.

Acknowledging Support from the UK

Majali expressed gratitude for the support the UK provides to Yemen, particularly in bolstering the capabilities of the Yemeni Coast Guard. He also appreciated the humanitarian assistance and political backing extended to the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni populace.

UK’s Commitment to Yemen’s Stability

In response, Stephen Hickey commended the efforts of the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government in pursuing peace. He reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to ensuring Yemen’s safety, stability, and development. Hickey also emphasized the importance of protecting maritime navigation routes in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Meeting Attendees

The meeting included notable attendees such as Muammar al-Eryani, the Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, and Abdullah Al-Jaboubi, the Deputy Head of the Yemeni Embassy in the UK.

This dialogue reflects a shared commitment to fostering peace and stability in Yemen, as both parties recognize the critical role of international cooperation in achieving these goals.
