Germany’s farmers have begun harvesting grain, but anxiety looms over the potential yield for this year. The primary concern stems from the drought and heat stress that affected large areas during the spring season.
According to the German Farmers’ Union, the national harvest is expected to be average, with significant regional disparities across states. Joachim Ruckwied, the union’s president, plans to announce detailed harvest predictions during a field event in Brandenburg. These regional differences could greatly impact both the quantity and quality of the harvest.
A spokesperson for the union highlighted that the spring drought and high temperatures pose serious concerns. These adverse conditions directly affect both the quantity and quality of the harvest. While farmers achieved a substantial yield last summer, the current challenges may negatively influence production this year.
Farmers are also facing a sharp increase in costs alongside declining producer prices. This situation intensifies the pressure on the agricultural sector, which is already grappling with market fluctuations. In June, Ruckwied stated that the pricing situation for field crops is extremely poor for all types of grains, except for oilseed rape. This trend threatens the sustainability of agricultural production in Germany.
