In separate incidents in the Yemeni provinces of Hodeidah and Marib, a civilian was killed and another was severely injured due to a landmine explosion and war remnants, shedding light on the ongoing peril from unexploded ordnance in conflict zones.
The Yemeni Mine Observatory reported on Friday that a civilian named Joudat Jaber Ahmed Majhesi, aged 28, lost his life to a Houthi landmine explosion in Hodeidah. The tragic event took place as Majhesi was returning from the market on his motorcycle in the “Qudbah” area of the Al-Durayhimi district, south of Hodeidah city. This incident underscores the lurking dangers that civilians face daily in areas contaminated with explosive remnants of war.
In a similar vein, the Observatory highlighted another grievous incident where a citizen, Ali Abdullah Al-Wahbi, sustained serious injuries from an explosion of a war projectile in the Mahliya district of Marib province. These incidents are stark reminders of the latent threats that unexploded ordnance and landmines pose to civilians in war-torn regions.
Hodeidah and Marib are among the Yemeni provinces most contaminated with Houthi landmines and explosive war remnants. These hazardous leftovers have resulted in the deaths and injuries of hundreds of civilians over the past years. The persistence of these threats highlights the urgent need for comprehensive demining efforts and increased awareness among local populations to mitigate the risk of further casualties.
The recent casualties in Hodeidah and Marib serve as a grim reminder of the enduring impact of conflict on civilian populations, particularly the threat posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance. As Yemen continues to grapple with the consequences of ongoing conflict, the international community’s role in supporting demining operations and rehabilitation efforts remains crucial to safeguard civilian lives and restore peace to war-stricken communities.
