Customs Officials Seize Advanced Cryptocurrency Mining Equipment in Al-Mahra
In a significant operation today, customs officials, in collaboration with security agencies, intercepted a shipment containing 15 advanced cryptocurrency mining devices, specifically the Whatsminer M31S model, at the Al-Shahn customs checkpoint in Al-Mahra Governorate. This action forms part of the government’s ongoing efforts to combat smuggling in all its forms.
Shipment Details and Deceptive Practices
The authorities discovered the shipment concealed within a truck carrying various goods. The shipment’s technical description had been manipulated to evade customs, financial, and security scrutiny. It was falsely declared as digital data processing units. After thorough verification and consultation with the Central Bank, officials analyzed the documentation in accordance with customs regulations, the Central Bank Law, and anti-money laundering laws.
Technical Examination Reveals True Purpose
A detailed technical examination confirmed that these devices are exclusively designed for cryptocurrency production. Such technologies typically facilitate financial liquidity outside the banking system, allowing individuals to circumvent international sanctions.
Commitment to Combat Smuggling
Thabet Awad, the Director General of Al-Shahn Customs, reiterated the commitment of customs officials to effectively perform their duties. He emphasized their vigilance against smuggling attempts and technical infiltration, particularly through the alteration of scientific and technical names of sensitive devices to facilitate their passage. Awad also highlighted the support from the Customs Authority leadership in enhancing the skills and capabilities of customs personnel, which plays a crucial role in successful seizures and achievements in the fight against smuggling.
This operation underscores the ongoing commitment of Yemeni authorities to uphold regulations and maintain financial integrity in the face of evolving smuggling tactics.
