Apple aims to encourage consumers to embrace a new technological reality with the Apple Watch’s ability to listen to its surroundings and convert audio into text. This feature relies on artificial intelligence and has sparked extensive discussions about privacy and the limits of this technology.
Reports indicate that the surprise at the launch event for Apple’s new devices was not the foldable iPhone but rather the announcement of features like Audio Intelligence, Live Rewind, and Siri Recap. These capabilities allow the watch to process ambient sound and transcribe it, raising legal and ethical questions about recording conversations without consent.
The Live Rewind feature enables users to rewind 15 seconds and transcribe spoken words at the push of a button. Meanwhile, Siri Recap automatically takes “general notes” on conversations. Although Apple asserts that audio is neither recorded nor stored and that data is fully encrypted, privacy experts express concerns that normalizing the concept of “constant listening” may alarm users.
Apple suggests that these new features could assist individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing by alerting them to important sounds. However, the company acknowledges that some applications may appear intrusive, especially given the growing public resistance to surveillance technologies.
