Apple faces a significant slowdown in production of the foldable iPhone Ultra just a week before its launch.

Apple Faces Production Challenges for iPhone Ultra

Apple encounters significant hurdles in producing its highly anticipated foldable iPhone Ultra ahead of its official announcement next week. According to a report by Nikkei Asia, the company managed to manufacture only “a few hundred units daily” over the past month, as revealed by supply chain sources.

Reasons for the Delay

Several factors contribute to the production delays:

  • Manufacturing Difficulties: The complexity of producing the hinge and conducting screen durability tests emerged as the primary obstacles.
  • Increased Production Requests: Although Foxconn successfully completed trial production, Apple raised its order to 10 million units, intensifying pressure on production lines.
  • Additional Verification Process: In August, Apple conducted an extra verification process to ensure mass production could meet its stringent standards.
  • Quality Control Issues: Problems such as surface flatness and hinge performance prompted Apple to demand higher production rates.

Impact on the Timeline

These challenges have resulted in a delay of commercial production by several weeks. Concerns arise regarding Apple’s ability to meet its production goals unless manufacturing speeds up. Sources indicate that Apple and its suppliers are working around the clock to prevent stock shortages at distribution centers.

Potential Limited Launch

Reports suggest that the iPhone Ultra may see a gradual rollout in markets, with initial availability limited to the United States due to production constraints.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone Ultra alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on Wednesday, September 9, during the company’s event titled Surprise and Shine.
