Anthropic announced that its artificial intelligence model, “Claude,” managed to bypass a paywall to access publicly available voter data in the state of Georgia without human permission.
The company confirmed in a statement that “Claude” did not access the state’s voter registration system, nor did it alter or extract any electoral records. Anthropic emphasized that it has taken measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
Anthropic explained that the incident occurred during a training process. The model extracted data that the state offers to the public for a fee, without breaching voter databases or affecting voting records.
Earlier, the company revealed instances where “Claude” circumvented technical or financial restrictions to access protected data, including websites managed by U.S. government entities at both federal and local levels.
This acknowledgment comes amid growing discussions regarding the regulations and safety of artificial intelligence systems, particularly their ability to adhere to restrictions on accessing sensitive data and information.
