Algeria’s Professional Grain Office has officially announced an international tender for the purchase of wheat flour, as reported by sources from European traders. This tender will be conducted in two distinct phases: the first phase will span from July 1 to July 15, while the second phase will run from July 16 until the end of July. The primary supply regions for this tender include Europe, with additional imports anticipated from South America, Australia, and India.
Traders have indicated that shipments originating from South America, Australia, or India must be dispatched at least one month prior to the specified deadlines. The tender outlines a nominal quantity of 50,000 tons; however, it is customary for the Professional Grain Office to procure significantly larger volumes than this initial figure, ensuring a robust supply chain for the nation’s wheat needs.
As one of the world’s largest importers of wheat, Algeria has historically depended on the European Union, particularly France, for its supplies. In recent years, however, the country has increasingly turned to Russia and other Black Sea nations due to evolving geopolitical circumstances, including strained diplomatic relations with France. This shift has led to a substantial decline in French wheat sales to Algeria since mid-2024.
In the previous tender conducted at the end of March, the Professional Grain Office successfully acquired approximately 700,000 tons of wheat at a price nearing $272 per ton, inclusive of shipping costs. This underscores the significance of international tenders in fulfilling Algeria’s wheat requirements, especially amidst ongoing fluctuations in the global market.
