On Tuesday, Sultan al-Arada, a member of the Presidential Leadership Council and Governor of Marib, met with a delegation from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The delegation, led by Martin Vandriel, the coordinator for the Institutional and Economic Resilience Enhancement Project in Yemen (SIERY), discussed upcoming project plans and interventions.
During the meeting, al-Arada highlighted the deteriorating humanitarian and living conditions in Yemen, particularly in Marib. The province faces significant challenges due to a high population density and ongoing displacement, which has strained the already weak infrastructure.
Al-Arada praised the UNDP’s humanitarian efforts in Yemen over the past years. He urged the program to increase its humanitarian interventions and projects to support the government and local authorities. This support aims to address the growing humanitarian needs and alleviate the worsening crisis across the country.
The governor emphasized the importance of expanding the SIERY project, which aims to assist local authorities in enhancing their capabilities. The goal is to ensure continued delivery of essential services to citizens and facilitate recovery across all sectors, in line with the priorities outlined in next year’s humanitarian response plan.
Martin Vandriel, the head of the UNDP delegation, explained that the visit to Marib is part of a broader field tour covering several provinces. This tour focuses on monitoring the implementation of the SIERY project and assessing the urgent needs based on local authorities’ priorities.
Vandriel noted that the project primarily targets local economic development and aims to foster partnerships with the private sector. This approach seeks to tackle three key challenges: the large influx of displaced persons, the slow pace of development to match population growth, and the increasing demand for emergency assistance.
The ongoing collaboration between the UNDP and local authorities aims to create a sustainable framework for addressing Yemen’s pressing humanitarian and economic challenges.
