Training Course on Epidemic Preparedness Concludes in Aden

The training course focused on epidemic preparedness and response to cross-border outbreaks concluded today in Aden, Yemen’s temporary capital. The General Directorate of Port Health and Quarantine organized the event in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority and Aden Gulf Foundation, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Participants Gain Valuable Knowledge

Over three days, 35 participants from various relevant sectors received essential training on epidemic management and outbreak response. The course aimed to equip attendees with the knowledge necessary to address public health challenges effectively.

Minister Highlights Importance of Health Workers

Dr. Qassem Buhibeh, Yemen’s Minister of Public Health and Population, emphasized the critical role of health workers at airports and ports in ensuring national health security. He noted the increasing national and international focus on health surveillance and the movement towards a “One Health” approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health.

Call for Enhanced Collaboration

Minister Buhibeh urged all government sectors operating at border crossings to fulfill their responsibilities effectively. He assured that the Ministry of Health would support health initiatives at these points and implement measures to build the capacity of health personnel while enhancing coordination among various sectors.

Importance of Multi-Sector Collaboration

Engineer Tarek Abdu, Deputy Minister of Transport for Air Transport, underscored the significance of such training programs in fostering multi-sector collaboration on health issues at border points. This collaboration is vital for improving public health responses.

Strengthening International Health Regulations

Captain Mohammed Nasher, Deputy of the Civil Aviation Authority and Meteorology, explained that the authority is working to strengthen compliance with International Health Regulations, including the health annex of the Civil Aviation Agreement. This effort aims to enhance health safety measures at airports.

Call for More Training Opportunities

Abdulraqeeb Al-Mamari, Director General of Aden International Airport, called for similar training sessions targeting all health workers and agencies operating at the airport. He believes that continuous education is essential for effective health management.

WHO’s Commitment to Strengthening Health Points

Dr. Sardar, Acting Director of the WHO Office in Aden, stated that the organization is committed to enhancing and supporting health checkpoints in Yemen as part of the Pandemic Fund project. This initiative aims to build essential capacities at border crossings.

A Unified Approach to Health Security

Dr. Jamal Al-Mas, Director General of Port Health and Quarantine, highlighted that this training aligns with the One Health approach. He urged all departments involved in port health and quarantine to develop a national strategic plan for health security at border crossings and to strengthen inter-sectoral coordination.

This training course marks a significant step towards improving Yemen’s preparedness for epidemics and enhancing public health safety at its borders.
