A young man tragically lost his life due to a landmine explosion in the Al-Lukhb Valley, located in the Sabir area of Lahij Province. The landmine, remnants of the Houthi militia supported by the Iranian regime, poses a significant threat to local communities.
According to a statement from the Security Media, emergency responders transported the young man to the Otaaf Clinic in the Quraida village. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival, highlighting the immediate dangers posed by unexploded ordnance in the region.
On Sunday, the “Masam” project, which focuses on mine clearance and operates under the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, announced the removal of 861 landmines, unexploded munitions, and improvised explosive devices in the past week. This brings the total number of cleared explosives since February to 2,111.
Since its inception, the Masam project has successfully removed over 482,000 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and improvised explosive devices. This staggering figure underscores the severe risk these explosives pose to civilian lives.
Since the Houthi militia’s takeover in 2014, they have planted vast quantities of landmines and explosive devices in residential areas and along roads they control. This reckless strategy has resulted in thousands of civilian casualties, including women and children, further emphasizing the urgent need for continued mine clearance efforts in affected regions.
The ongoing threat of landmines in Yemen remains a critical humanitarian issue. Efforts by organizations like Masam are vital in mitigating these dangers and ensuring the safety of local populations.
