A recent human rights report documented 179 violations committed by Houthi militia against individuals and property in Taiz Governorate during 2024. This information comes from the annual report by the Human Rights Information and Training Center (HRITC), titled “Taiz: A Siege in the Shadow of Forgetting.”
The report reveals that the Houthi militia accounted for 179 of the 233 total violations reported in Taiz last year. These violations included acts of killing, injury, kidnapping, and attacks on property.
The report details that the Houthi militia was responsible for the deaths of 34 civilians and injuries to 63 others. These incidents stemmed from various attacks, including shelling, sniper fire, and landmines. Notably, a horrific massacre occurred on December 1, when the militia targeted a popular market in the village of Al-Boumiya in the Maqbana district using a drone. This attack resulted in the deaths of six civilians and injuries to eight more.
In terms of property violations, the report indicates that the Houthi militia committed 72 offenses against private property. Among these, they destroyed 41 homes and 29 vehicles, significantly impacting the local community.
The report also highlights other violations attributed to different groups. Armed individuals outside state control committed 24 violations, while government forces were responsible for 15. Additionally, the American-British coalition was linked to nine violations, and unidentified armed groups accounted for six incidents.
The HRITC report sheds light on the ongoing human rights abuses in Taiz, emphasizing the urgent need for accountability and protection for civilians in conflict zones. As the situation develops, continued monitoring and reporting will be essential to address these violations and support affected communities.
