A meeting chaired by Taiz Governor Nabil Shamsan took place today to discuss preparations for a workshop organized by the Water Group. This workshop aims to address local mediation efforts to restore water supply from Al-Houban to the city. The initiative is crucial for tackling the ongoing water scarcity crisis in the region.
Governor Shamsan emphasized the need for thorough preparation ahead of the workshop. He believes that a well-organized gathering will contribute significantly to resolving water issues and lead to a unified vision that benefits the province. He praised the efforts of local mediators and international organizations supporting the restoration of water supplies from Al-Houban fields, particularly focusing on repairing transport lines and enhancing internal water networks. The governor highlighted the installation of water meters and the distribution of water to residential areas, especially since water supply has ceased since the onset of the war.
Nabil Jamal, the Director of the Planning and International Cooperation Office in Taiz, reviewed the arrangements for the workshop. He noted that UNICEF is coordinating the event, which will feature high-level participation from donors and UN agencies. Jamal outlined the key topics, issues, and expected outcomes of the workshop, underlining the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing the water crisis.
Engineer Samir Abdulwahid, Director of the Water and Sanitation Corporation in Taiz, presented reports on the current water situation and the damage to networks that have hindered water access for citizens since the war began. He discussed the collaborative efforts made by the corporation, alongside local and international organizations, to repair and rehabilitate water networks, transport lines, and storage tanks. Abdulwahid affirmed that the success of local mediation efforts and the resumption of water pumping from Al-Houban would significantly impact water accessibility for residents.
Ala Al-Aghbari, President of the Saba Youth Organization, addressed the local mediation efforts over the past year aimed at restoring water flow from Al-Houban to the city. She described the various stages of mediation that have occurred, emphasizing the progress made toward achieving positive outcomes for this critical issue affecting residents.
This meeting represents a significant step toward resolving the water shortages in Taiz, bringing together local authorities, international organizations, and community leaders to create a sustainable solution for the region’s water supply challenges.
