Animal Rights Organization Calls for Crystal Palace to End Use of Live Eagle

The animal rights organization, PETA, has urged English football club Crystal Palace to stop using a live eagle as its mascot. The organization argues that crowded stadiums and bright lights do not provide a suitable environment for animals.

Formal Request to Club Executives

PETA sent a letter to the club’s CEO, Sharon Lacey, requesting the cessation of the eagle named “Phoenix” from pre-match displays at Selhurst Park. The organization also called for the club to refrain from using live animals as mascots in the future.

History of the Club’s Mascot

Crystal Palace has been known as “The Eagles” since 1973. The club began using a live eagle during matches in 2010. The eagle “Kayla” served in this role for ten years until its death in 2020. “Phoenix” made its debut in August 2024.

Concerns for Animal Welfare

PETA highlighted that birds can experience fear, confusion, and panic in stadiums, posing risks to both the animals and fans. The organization emphasized that using animals in entertainment deprives them of their natural behaviors, leading to stress and anxiety.

Incidents Involving Live Mascots

The organization cited several incidents where live mascots suffered injuries or even death. These included birds colliding with walls, windows, and footballs, as well as accidents that resulted in injuries to spectators.

Alternative Mascot Options

Dr. Karis Bennett, a senior official at PETA, noted that many sports clubs employ individuals to perform mascot roles. She pointed out that Crystal Palace already has a character representing the eagle, which can engage fans without the need for a live animal.

The Symbolism of the Eagle

Bennett added that the eagle symbolizes freedom and deserves better treatment than being used as entertainment in sporting events.
