A human rights organization condemned a recent attack by Houthi militants in the Maqbana district of western Taiz, labeling it a “war crime.” The organization, Rights Radar, expressed its outrage over the deaths of two children and injuries to two others due to an artillery strike by the Houthi group.
Rights Radar reported that the attack targeted the “Al-Boumiya” area in Maqbana, resulting in the tragic deaths of two siblings, Dhaib Bakr and Shaima Bakr Qaid. Their sister, Maryal, and their cousin, Abdul Wahid Ali Qaid, sustained injuries from the shelling. This incident occurred near their home and follows a similar attack earlier this month, which resulted in 14 civilian casualties.
The organization described the assault as a “war crime” that adds to the growing list of violations against civilians, disregarding humanitarian and legal constraints. In light of this tragedy, Rights Radar urged Hans Grundberg, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, to conduct a field visit. This visit would allow him to witness firsthand the suffering endured by residents in villages and communities situated along the front lines.
Local authorities in Maqbana confirmed the fatalities and injuries from the Houthi mortar attack. The community has faced ongoing violence, with previous incidents causing significant harm to civilians. The recent escalation in hostilities raises concerns about the safety and well-being of innocent lives in the region.
The condemnation from Rights Radar highlights the urgent need for accountability and protection of civilians in conflict zones. As the situation in Yemen continues to deteriorate, international attention and intervention remain critical to addressing the humanitarian crisis and ensuring the safety of vulnerable populations.
