Women’s Role in Community Development: A Discussion in Marib

Today, a discussion seminar titled “The Role of Women in Community Development: Between Reality and Aspirations” took place in Marib Governorate. The event, organized by the National Women’s Committee Office and the Yemeni Center for Strategic Studies, celebrated International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8.

Opening Remarks Highlight Achievements

During the seminar’s opening, Dr. Badour Al-Maori, Vice President for Academic Affairs at the Saba Region University, attended alongside key officials. Salah Al-Saqaf, Director of the Planning and International Cooperation Office, and Mohammed Al-Bazli, Director of the Governor’s Office, praised the achievements of women in Marib over recent years. They highlighted the establishment of women’s administrative branches and the progress made in women’s empowerment.

Objectives of the Seminar

Sadia Aqaar, Director General of the National Women’s Committee Office in Marib, emphasized the seminar’s goal of discussing women’s roles in community development. She noted the importance of showcasing women’s achievements and formulating recommendations to enhance their contributions. Aqaar called for increased support from higher authorities to empower women, enabling them to participate actively in community building and decision-making across various development sectors. She asserted that Yemeni women represent a fundamental pillar in the development process.

Challenges Faced by Women

Finda Al-Amari, Director General of Women’s Development at the Governorate Office, and Aisha Abdul-Maghni, Director General of Women’s Development in the Capital, addressed the challenges posed by the ongoing conflict. They discussed the significant negative impacts of war on Yemeni women. Despite these challenges, they highlighted women’s resilience and their role as ambassadors for Yemen through their ethical conduct and leadership in various activities.

The Role of Civil Society Organizations

Arwa Al-Rimah from the Marib Girls Foundation and Bushra Al-Azab from the Humanitarian Organization for Women and Children spoke about the vital role of civil society organizations. They discussed how these organizations support women through protective programs, helping them overcome obstacles and transition to recovery.

Key Discussion Topics

The seminar focused on three main topics. The first topic addressed “The Role of Women in Community Development as Institutions and Individuals.” The second topic examined “The Difficulties and Challenges Women Face in Community Development.” Finally, the third topic explored “The Expected Role of Women in Achieving Greater and Broader Development in the Future.”

This seminar not only highlighted the achievements of women in Marib but also aimed to foster a dialogue on the necessary steps to enhance their roles in community development.
