The Health Minister discusses support for Yemen’s healthcare sector with the U.S. Ambassador and USAID representatives.

Strengthening Health Cooperation Between Yemen and the United States

Today, Dr. Qassem Baheebah, Yemen’s Minister of Health and Population, met with Stephen Fagin, the U.S. Ambassador to Yemen, and Kevin Dean, the Country Director of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The discussion focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in the health sector.

During the meeting, Minister Baheebah outlined the current state of Yemen’s health sector and the significant challenges it faces. He highlighted the ministry’s ongoing efforts to restore health centers and hospitals in liberated provinces. The minister emphasized the importance of U.S. support for joint health projects funded by USAID, which have played a crucial role in improving and sustaining health services for citizens.

Addressing Resource Shortages

Minister Baheebah pointed out that a shortage of resources and a decline in international support for the health sector have compelled the ministry to seek sustainable self-funding sources. This initiative aims to bridge the gap in meeting the basic needs of the health sector.

U.S. Commitment to Yemen’s Health Sector

In response, Ambassador Fagin reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Yemen’s health sector. He noted the agency’s efforts in implementing various health projects across Yemeni provinces, which have significantly impacted the local population.

Meeting Attendees

Dr. Mohammed Al-Qabati, the health attaché at the Yemeni embassy in Riyadh, also attended the meeting.

This collaboration between Yemen and the United States underscores a shared commitment to improving health outcomes in the region, addressing critical challenges, and ensuring that essential health services remain accessible to all citizens.
