The Gulf-European Summit reaffirms its support for a sustainable peace process in Yemen.

Gulf Cooperation Council and European Union Affirm Support for Yemen’s Peace Process

In a significant show of solidarity, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the European Union (EU) have reaffirmed their full support for a comprehensive and peaceful political process in Yemen. This commitment comes under the auspices of the United Nations and aligns with Security Council Resolution 2216. The announcement took place during the GCC-EU summit held in Brussels on Wednesday.

Ensuring Maritime Security in the Red Sea

The final statement from the summit emphasized the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation and maritime security in the Red Sea. These elements are crucial for global trade and the movement of essential goods, including humanitarian aid destined for Yemen. The leaders underscored the need for safe passage through these vital maritime routes.

Concerns Over Security Threats

Both the GCC and the EU expressed deep concern regarding threats to security and navigation in the region. They called on the Houthi militia to cease attacks on vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The coalition urged the group to avoid any further escalatory actions that could jeopardize global security and stability.

Environmental Protection Efforts

The summit’s statement also welcomed ongoing efforts to mitigate environmental impacts following the recent attacks by the Houthis on the Greek oil tanker “Sounion.” Protecting the marine environment remains a priority for both regional and international stakeholders.

Call for Humanitarian Access

The GCC and EU urged the Houthi militia to release all humanitarian workers, UN staff, and local diplomats currently held captive. This action is essential to enhance the international community’s ability to assist millions of Yemenis in need.

Acknowledging Diplomatic Efforts

The leaders commended the efforts of Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the United Nations in pursuing a comprehensive and sustainable political solution to the crisis in Yemen. Their collaborative approach aims to foster peace and stability in the region.

This summit marks a pivotal moment in international diplomacy concerning Yemen, as both the GCC and EU commit to supporting peace initiatives and ensuring the safety of maritime operations in the Red Sea.
