Deputy Foreign Minister Discusses Humanitarian Situation in Yemen with Saudi Ambassador
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Mustafa Noman met today with the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Abdul Mohsen bin Khtaila. They discussed the latest developments in the political and humanitarian situation in Yemen, the implications of the military escalation by the Houthi terrorist militias, and ways to enhance bilateral and diplomatic coordination between the two countries’ missions in international multilateral forums.
Humanitarian Crisis and Internal Displacement
During the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the 77th session of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Deputy Minister Noman highlighted the worsening humanitarian crisis in Yemen. He noted the recent increase in internal displacement and the flow of migrants across the sea towards the Djiboutian coast.
Noman emphasized the humanitarian suffering caused by the siege imposed by the Houthi terrorist militias on the city of Taiz. This blockade has deprived hundreds of thousands of residents of basic necessities, including water, food, and medicine. He also pointed out the dangers posed by the military escalation of the militias to civilian lives.
Threats to Maritime Navigation and International Trade
The Deputy Minister addressed the threats that the militias pose to maritime navigation and international trade in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. He warned of the negative repercussions on global supply chains, shipping costs, and insurance. Furthermore, he cautioned against the militias exploiting irregular migration flows from the Horn of Africa, using migrants for extortion and recruitment for combat.
Challenges of Irregular Migration and Human Trafficking
Ambassador Muthana Al-Amri, Director of the International Organizations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reviewed the challenges related to irregular migration and cross-border smuggling and human trafficking networks. He stressed the importance of developing coordination mechanisms and partnerships between relevant authorities and international organizations to address these issues.
Saudi Arabia’s Support for Yemen
Ambassador Abdul Mohsen bin Khtaila reaffirmed the deep fraternal and historical relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Yemen. He reiterated the Kingdom’s steadfast position in supporting the Presidential Leadership Council and the legitimate government, as well as assisting the Yemeni people on various political, military, developmental, and humanitarian levels.
The Saudi representative emphasized the importance of continuing political and diplomatic coordination and unifying positions in international forums to expose the violations of the Houthi terrorist militias and to rally international support for restoring state institutions and establishing security, stability, and peace in Yemen.
