International Organization for Migration Reports Displacement of Over 2,600 Yemeni Families
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported that more than 2,600 Yemeni families have been displaced in the past eight months. This includes approximately 1,000 families who fled in August alone, a month marked by intensified conflict involving Houthi forces across several provinces.
Displacement Statistics
In a report released on Tuesday, the IOM detailed that its displacement tracking matrix recorded the movement of 2,631 families, totaling 15,786 individuals, from January 1 to August 29 of this year. Previous statistics indicated that 1,664 families had been displaced during the first seven months of 2023. This means that August alone saw the displacement of 967 new families, particularly in the provinces of Taiz, Al Hudaydah, and Marib, where Houthi escalation was most pronounced.
Excluded Evacuations
The cumulative statistics do not account for evacuations that occurred in displacement camps in the Mawza district of Taiz on August 25 and 26. These evacuations were prompted by security concerns stemming from the recent Houthi offensive. According to a separate report from the IOM, 227 families relocated from these camps to other sites within the district.
Weekly Displacement Trends
The IOM also noted that between August 23 and 29, 2023, it recorded 274 families (1,644 individuals) who experienced displacement at least once. Most of these new displacements originated from the western rural areas of Taiz and coastal regions, including Mawza and Al Mukha, as well as southern districts in Al Hudaydah (Hays, Al Jarrahi, and Jabal Ras) and Ibb. The displaced families found refuge primarily in Taiz (215 families), Al Hudaydah (23 families), Marib (17 families), Lahij (12 families), and Hadramaut (7 families).
Causes of Displacement
The IOM highlighted that conflict accounted for 95% of the new displacement cases, affecting 261 families. Economic factors contributed to the displacement of 12 families, representing 4% of the total.
Additional Displacement Reports
Furthermore, the IOM identified an additional 116 families displaced during previous reporting periods in the following provinces: Taiz (76 families), Lahij (18 families), Al Hudaydah (12 families), and Marib (10 families). These figures have been added to the cumulative total of recorded displacements since the beginning of the year.
This ongoing crisis underscores the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and conflict resolution in Yemen, as families continue to face dire circumstances amid escalating violence.
