China Sees 4.9% Growth in Service Trade in 2026

China’s service trade experienced a significant increase of 4.9% year-on-year from January to April 2026, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce. This robust growth highlights a positive performance in travel services and knowledge-intensive services, indicating a notable recovery in various economic sectors.

Growth in Travel Service Exports

The total value of service imports and exports reached approximately 2.49 trillion yuan (about $364.65 billion). Among these figures, travel service exports surged by 30.4%, totaling 147.15 billion yuan. This growth stems from a rising demand for both domestic and international travel following the easing of restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Expansion of Knowledge-Intensive Services

In addition to travel services, knowledge-intensive services also saw a growth rate of 5.1%, with a total value of 1.1 trillion yuan, accounting for 44.4% of the overall service trade. Notably, exports of cultural and entertainment services, as well as intellectual property rights, experienced remarkable increases of 39.5% and 20.8%, respectively. These statistics reflect China’s ability to adapt and innovate in emerging sectors.

Surge in Transportation Service Imports

The data further reveals that imports of transportation services reached 316.45 billion yuan, marking a 24.9% increase. This growth represents the fastest rate among the top five categories of service imports. It underscores active movements in global trade and a rising demand for transportation services, which supports China’s economic recovery.

Conclusion: A Promising Outlook for China’s Service Sector

Overall, these statistics demonstrate that China is making significant strides in its service sector, enhancing its economic standing on the global stage. The Chinese government continues to support this sector through policies aimed at boosting global trade and sustainable development.
