Yemen Reaffirms Commitment to Human Rights Amid Ongoing Challenges
The Republic of Yemen has reiterated its unwavering commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This declaration comes despite the extraordinary challenges the country faces due to the Houthi militia’s insurgency, which has severely impacted human rights, humanitarian conditions, and the economy.
Addressing the UN Human Rights Council
Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Dr. Ali Majour, delivered this message during the high-level session of the 61st Human Rights Council. The session saw the participation of numerous heads of state, government officials, and senior UN representatives. This gathering occurred against a backdrop of increasing political and financial challenges facing the United Nations and unprecedented pressures on the multilateral system.
Recent Developments in Yemen
Ambassador Majour highlighted significant developments in Yemen during December, particularly the coup attempts led by the so-called Southern Transitional Council, which received external support. These actions nearly destabilized the nation and threatened its territorial integrity, risking the hard-won national achievements and potentially igniting a new conflict. He emphasized that any attempts to impose a political reality through force only lead to further violations, undermine state institutions, and weaken the human rights protection framework.
Saudi Arabia’s Support
The ambassador acknowledged the supportive intervention by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which stemmed from a commitment to Yemen’s unity, security, and stability. This intervention helped the country avoid a new internal conflict that would have directly affected civilians and regional peace.
Call for International Support
Ambassador Majour stressed that achieving comprehensive and sustainable peace is the key to improving human rights conditions in Yemen. He renewed his call for the international community to support state institutions and assist in restoring stability, ensuring the protection of human rights and the dignity of the Yemeni people.
Attendance at the Session
Dr. Hamid Omar, Yemen’s Deputy Permanent Representative in Geneva, also attended the session, underscoring the importance of Yemen’s ongoing commitment to human rights and international cooperation.
