Council member Sultan al-Arada meets with the UN envoy to Yemen to discuss ongoing developments in the region.

Meeting Between Yemeni Leadership and UN Envoy

Today, Major General Sultan al-Arada, a member of the Presidential Leadership Council, met with Hans Grundberg, the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen. The two discussed the latest developments in the political, humanitarian, and military situations in Yemen, as well as the UN’s ongoing efforts to promote peace.

Houthi Militias’ Resistance to Peace

During the meeting, al-Arada emphasized that the Houthi militia, backed by the Iranian regime, remains far from achieving peace. He attributed this to their ideology, which they refer to as “divine right” and “guardianship of the jurist.” Al-Arada noted that the Houthis rely on violence as their only means to impose their sectarian agenda on society, thus obstructing any serious efforts toward peace.

Ongoing Violations by Houthi Militias

Al-Arada highlighted the continuous severe violations committed by the Houthi militia against civilians in areas under their control. These violations include killings, forced displacement, landmine planting, arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, and home demolitions. He pointed out that the militia’s oppressive practices against UN offices and humanitarian organizations in the seized capital, Sana’a, serve as clear evidence of their rejection of peace and their hostile behavior towards international efforts.

Commitment to Comprehensive Peace

The member of the Presidential Leadership Council reiterated that both the Council and the Yemeni government support a just and comprehensive peace that alleviates the suffering of the people. He stressed that this peace must be based on agreed-upon local, regional, and international references, including the Gulf Initiative and its executive mechanism, the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference, and relevant UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2216.

Support for UN Efforts

Al-Arada praised the UN envoy’s role and ongoing efforts to create favorable conditions for reviving the political process. He affirmed the political leadership’s support for these UN initiatives aimed at achieving security, stability, and the aspirations of the Yemeni people.

Acknowledgment of Saudi Arabia’s Support

Additionally, al-Arada commended the significant efforts made by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in supporting Yemen across various political, humanitarian, and developmental fronts. He recognized Saudi Arabia’s pivotal role in backing legitimacy, promoting peace efforts, and alleviating the suffering of the Yemeni people. He noted that these efforts reflect the Kingdom’s genuine commitment to the security and stability of Yemen and the region.

UN Envoy’s Commitment to Peace

In response, the UN envoy outlined his efforts and communications with various Yemeni, regional, and international parties. He reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to continue working with the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government, striving to advance the political process toward achieving lasting and comprehensive peace that alleviates humanitarian suffering in Yemen.

This meeting underscores the ongoing challenges and the collective efforts required to navigate the complex landscape of Yemen’s path to peace.
