The Ministry of Information and the 14 October Foundation for Press, Printing, and Publishing have expressed deep sorrow over the passing of renowned writer and journalist Salem Al-Faras. He passed away while receiving treatment in India after a prolonged battle with illness.
Celebrating a Life of Dedication and Creativity
In their official statement, the organizations praised Al-Faras for his humility, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his principles. Known for his constant smile and genuine patriotism, he addressed national concerns through his writings. Al-Faras championed freedom of thought, expression, and creativity, serving as a role model throughout his professional and personal life.
A Distinguished Career in Journalism
Al-Faras began his journalism career early, joining the 14 October newspaper in 1981. Over the course of more than four decades, he wrote a regular weekly column and eventually became the chief editor of the publication until his death. In 1990, he founded the Association for the Protection of Antiquities and Green Spaces, the first Yemeni organization dedicated to preserving cultural and environmental heritage. This initiative showcased his cultural and developmental awareness. Additionally, he launched the monthly newspaper “Al-Muheet,” where he served as both publisher and editor-in-chief, aiming to elevate cultural awareness within the community.
A Profound Loss for Literature and Society
The statement highlighted the significant loss felt by the literary community and society at large with Al-Faras’s passing. He was an active member of the Yemeni Writers’ Union and contributed to various literary genres, including poetry, short stories, and novels. Al-Faras was an engaged intellectual who used his writing to address pressing social issues, known for his bold and responsible critique of public affairs.
