In a significant diplomatic event, the Republic of Yemen took over the presidency of the 162nd session of the Arab League Council today. This transition occurred during the council’s meeting at the permanent delegate level, held at the Arab League’s General Secretariat headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
Expressions of Gratitude and Solidarity
Yemen’s permanent delegate to the Arab League, Ambassador Riyad Al-Akbari, expressed his deep appreciation to his Mauritanian counterpart, Hussein Ould Sidi, the outgoing president, for the efforts made by Mauritania during its term. These efforts were particularly noteworthy given the exceptional circumstances the Arab region faced, including the unjust Israeli war on the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank.
In his address, Ambassador Al-Akbari highlighted the global conscience’s failure to act in accordance with humanitarian values and laws against the extreme right-wing policies of the occupying state, marked by racism, fascism, and genocide. He criticized the international community and the United Nations Security Council for their inaction in stopping the fascist Israeli violations against the Palestinian people, despite growing global awareness and calls for Israel to be held accountable.
A Unified Arab Stance
Al-Akbari emphasized that this session of the Arab League Council would primarily focus on formulating a unified Arab position against the Zionist fascist aggression on the resilient Palestinian people. He described the current situation as one where an unarmed, occupied people are subjected to systematic genocide, ethnic cleansing, deliberate starvation, and displacement, highlighting the international community’s and the Security Council’s failure to support the Palestinian people.
Furthermore, Al-Akbari appreciated the countries and global public opinion that have stood in solidarity with the Palestinian cause, condemning and exposing Israel’s crimes in Gaza and across Palestinian territories.
Calls for International Action
The meetings during this session will seek to mobilize Arab efforts to urge the international community and the UN Security Council to impose effective sanctions on the Israeli occupation. The aim is to compel Israel to comply with international law, UN resolutions, and the International Court of Justice’s orders and advisory opinions, including the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of settlers from the occupied territories.
Yemen’s Firm Stance
Al-Akbari reiterated the Yemeni government’s strong condemnation of the Israeli Prime Minister’s statements regarding the Philadelphia Corridor. He expressed full solidarity with the Arab Republic of Egypt against these provocative statements and the Israeli military presence at the Philadelphia Corridor and the Rafah crossing. He also praised the efforts of Egypt and Qatar towards achieving a ceasefire and ending the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people.
This leadership transition marks a pivotal moment for Yemen and the Arab League, emphasizing the collective Arab effort to address the Palestinian issue and other regional challenges.
