The Republic of Yemen convened an urgent meeting of the Arab League Council at the level of permanent representatives today. This meeting addressed a memorandum from the President of the United Nations Security Council dated November 18, 2024. The memorandum highlighted claims by the Israeli occupying power regarding an increase in attacks from Iraqi territory since September 2024. The Israeli government uses these claims to justify its escalation and expansion of military actions in the region.
Discussion on International Support
The meeting, led by Yemen’s Acting Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Ambassador Dr. Ali Mousa, focused on the necessary actions to mobilize international support against Israeli measures. Participants expressed concern over Israel’s attempts to escalate its aggressive practices in the region, particularly in Iraq.
Resolution 9083: Condemnation of Israeli Aggression
The meeting resulted in the adoption of Resolution 9083, which condemned Israel’s efforts to expand its aggressive actions throughout the region, including Iraq. The Arab League Council views these actions as blatant attempts to justify Israeli aggression and divert attention from ongoing crimes against the Palestinian people.
Support for Iraq’s Security Measures
The resolution welcomed the announcement by the Iraqi government that its armed forces and security agencies would prevent and pursue any military activities outside the state’s control. This move aims to reinforce Iraq’s sovereignty and stability amid regional tensions.
Call for Action from the United Nations Security Council
Furthermore, the resolution urged the United Nations Security Council to fulfill its legal and moral responsibilities concerning the escalation of violence. It called for action to curb Israeli aggression in accordance with international law and legitimate international resolutions. The resolution also welcomed the International Criminal Court’s decision on November 21, 2024, to issue arrest warrants for the Israeli Prime Minister and the former Minister of Defense.
This meeting underscores the Arab League’s commitment to addressing regional security challenges and supporting the rights of the Palestinian people amid escalating tensions.
