WhatsApp implements a new security measure to prevent logins on outdated systems.

WhatsApp Introduces New Security Measure for Outdated Operating Systems

WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has announced a new security measure that prevents users from logging in if their device’s operating systems are outdated and not updated. This initiative aims to enhance security and protect accounts from potential vulnerabilities.

Applicable to Android and iOS: No Bypassing Allowed

The new update applies to both Android and iOS systems. Users will receive clear instructions on what steps to take before regaining access to the application. For security reasons, WhatsApp does not allow users to bypass this step, meaning that updating the operating system has become a prerequisite for re-logging in, according to WABetaInfo, a site that tracks WhatsApp updates.

Server-Side Update Without New Installation Required

This change occurs on the server side and does not require users to install a new version of the app itself. The rollout happens gradually for users on both Android and iOS platforms. WhatsApp also directs users to open their device settings and install the latest available update, although it has not yet provided a specific list of versions that will prevent users from logging in.

Why This Measure?

Reports indicate that WhatsApp’s security level also relies on the security of the device itself. Attackers continuously seek vulnerabilities in outdated operating systems to exploit them for installing malware that could intercept data stored on the phone. Through this measure, WhatsApp aims to make users aware that the app’s security does not exceed the security of the device it operates on.

Automatic Application on Affected Accounts

WhatsApp automatically applies this measure to any account using the app on a device with an outdated operating system. This process occurs through a gradual server-side update without the need to update the app itself.
