UN reports nearly 18 million Yemenis are suffering from a lack of clean water.

UN Reports Water Crisis in Yemen on World Water Day

On March 22, coinciding with World Water Day, the United Nations highlighted a critical issue affecting Yemen. According to a statement from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), approximately 18 million Yemenis currently face a severe shortage of clean water due to ongoing conflict and its humanitarian repercussions.

Millions Affected by Water Scarcity

The IOM reported that nearly 17.8 million people suffer daily from a lack of access to clean water. This alarming statistic underscores the dire situation many Yemenis endure as they navigate the challenges of daily life amid a protracted crisis.

Impact of Conflict and Economic Collapse

The organization emphasized that over a decade of conflict, displacement, and economic decline has left communities grappling with harsh living conditions and limited opportunities for livelihood. The ongoing instability has exacerbated the water crisis, making it increasingly difficult for families to secure this essential resource.

Humanitarian Response and Support Initiatives

In response to this pressing issue, the IOM, with support from the German government, has initiated “cash-for-work” activities. These programs aim to rehabilitate water infrastructure while providing immediate income to over 600 vulnerable participants in Marib and southern Taiz. This initiative falls under the second phase of the project titled “Improving Water Resource Management for Internally Displaced Communities.”

Conclusion

The situation in Yemen remains critical as millions continue to struggle with water scarcity. The international community’s support and targeted humanitarian efforts are essential to alleviate the suffering and improve living conditions for those affected.
