### U.S. and China Prepare for First Official AI Safety Dialogue
The United States and China are set to hold their first official dialogue focused on artificial intelligence (AI) safety in mid-September. This development comes as global AI capabilities reach a critical turning point, according to sources cited by Reuters.
### Key Details of the Upcoming Talks
These discussions will mark the first formal engagement since President Donald Trump began his second term. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Pessen will lead the American delegation. However, a White House official indicated that no meeting is currently scheduled for mid-September, highlighting the sensitivity of the topic and conflicting signals regarding the arrangements.
President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to meet on September 24 during a summit in Washington.
### Cybersecurity Threats Driven by AI
One source revealed that Washington aims to explore collaboration on monitoring cyberattacks potentially executed by AI agents. The U.S. has proposed that AI laboratories in both countries engage in self-monitoring and information sharing to prevent any possible attacks.
This initiative follows a series of serious incidents, including:
– A breach involving approximately 700 AI agents from Hugging Face, where perpetrators attempted to cover their tracks by falsifying records.
– Another incident where AI agents compromised a German website, transforming it into a billboard for AI agents.
### U.S. Concerns Over Advanced Chinese Models
Washington expresses concern over the potential emergence of a Chinese model comparable to Anthropic’s advanced METHOS, capable of executing sophisticated cyberattacks. In June, a U.S. official accused the Chinese company Moonshot AI of stealing outputs from Anthropic’s FABLE model to develop its K3 model. This alleged theft involved a technique known as “distillation,” which trains a smaller model using outputs from a larger, more expensive one.
The upcoming dialogue between the U.S. and China represents a crucial step in addressing the challenges posed by AI in cybersecurity and fostering international cooperation in this rapidly evolving field.
