Minister of Transport Discusses EU Cooperation in Yemen

ADEN, Yemen — Dr. Abdul Salam Hamid, Yemen’s Minister of Transport, met today with a delegation of European Union ambassadors in the temporary capital of Aden. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation to support the country’s transport sectors.

Government Efforts for Economic Recovery

During the meeting, Minister Hamid highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to address the country’s general conditions. He outlined various steps and measures taken to achieve economic recovery and improve public services and living conditions for citizens.

EU Support Initiatives

Minister Hamid also reviewed the support and assistance provided by the European Union to the Yemeni government. This support includes addressing the Safer oil tanker issue to prevent an environmental disaster and the "Krimario 2" project aimed at enhancing port security in the Red Sea. The initiatives involve building the capacities of the General Authority for Maritime Affairs, the Aden Port Authority, and the Coast Guard, as well as rehabilitating the regional maritime information exchange center located at the General Authority for Maritime Affairs. He urged continued EU support to enhance the effectiveness of these facilities in fulfilling their roles.

Impact of Houthi Militias on Infrastructure

The Minister addressed the developments and repercussions of the ongoing conflict instigated by Houthi militias, which have directly affected the country’s infrastructure and national gains. He expressed the government’s hope for a more serious role from the EU and the international community in pressuring these militias to pursue peace.

EU Ambassadors Reaffirm Support for Yemen

In response, the EU ambassadors confirmed their ongoing support for Yemen and the UN-led peace efforts. They noted that the EU had issued a strong statement condemning the actions of Houthi militias in the Red Sea, which threaten maritime navigation.

The ambassadors reiterated their commitment to supporting Yemen’s political leadership and government in implementing reforms to address the challenges facing the country.

EU Delegation Visits Maritime Information Center

In a related development, the EU ambassadors, accompanied by Captain Ali Al-Sabhi, Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs, and Captain Yasslam Mubarak, Deputy Head of the General Authority for Maritime Affairs, visited the regional maritime information exchange center. They praised the center’s contributions to securing maritime navigation at national, regional, and international levels.

This meeting underscores the importance of international cooperation in stabilizing Yemen and enhancing its transport infrastructure amidst ongoing challenges.
