The Saudi program enhances water sources in Aden and Hadramout using renewable energy.

Saudi Program for Development and Reconstruction of Yemen: Enhancing Water Security

The Saudi Program for Development and Reconstruction of Yemen (SPDRY) actively implements sustainable development projects and initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure and essential services across Yemen. The program focuses on eight vital sectors, including water, through 58 projects and initiatives that enhance water resource management, diversify water sources, and improve water distribution efficiency in urban and rural areas.

Renewable Energy Water Security Projects in Aden and Hadhramaut

Among the key initiatives is the project to enhance water security through renewable energy in the governorates of Aden and Hadhramaut. This project, developed in collaboration with Sila Development Company, aims to strengthen water sources in targeted areas by utilizing renewable energy. By doing so, the project promotes the sustainability of water resources and reduces operational costs. Additionally, it builds the capacity of personnel involved in the projects to use, operate, and maintain solar energy systems.

Enhancing Water Supply in Aden

In Aden, the project focuses on equipping ten wells in the Ahmad field with renewable energy. This involves supplying and installing a solar power station with a production capacity of 600 kilowatts. As a result, the project will decrease reliance on electricity for well operations and lower the cost of producing each unit of water. Furthermore, it will increase the water production capacity of the field by 36%, benefiting approximately 800,000 residents in Aden.

Improving Water Access in Hadhramaut

The water security project in Hadhramaut aims to diversify water sources and enhance the capacity to meet basic water needs in nine districts along the coast and in the Wadi Hadhramaut. This initiative will reduce dependence on fossil fuels for well operations by utilizing solar energy systems. The project is expected to directly and indirectly benefit around 1.7 million people.

Comprehensive Development Efforts

It is noteworthy that the Saudi Program for Development and Reconstruction of Yemen has launched 264 projects and initiatives across eight essential sectors. These sectors include education, health, water, energy, transportation, agriculture and fisheries, government capacity building, and various developmental programs in different governorates. The program’s comprehensive approach aims to foster sustainable development and improve the quality of life for the Yemeni people.
