In a recent virtual meeting, Dr. Afrah Al-Zuba, Yemen’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, engaged with Zhao Cheng, the Charge d’Affaires of the People’s Republic of China in Yemen. The discussion focused on enhancing bilateral relations and expanding developmental and economic cooperation between the two nations.
The meeting addressed several critical areas, including the activation of the Memorandum of Understanding related to the Belt and Road Initiative, signed in 2019. Both parties explored opportunities to leverage Chinese expertise in solar energy, infrastructure projects, capacity building, and scholarship programs.
Both sides agreed on the necessity of reactivating the Yemeni-Chinese Joint Committee for Economic and Technical Cooperation. This committee will serve as an institutional framework to coordinate bilateral cooperation and improve direct communication with the Chinese International Development Cooperation Agency.
Minister Al-Zuba expressed the Yemeni government’s appreciation for China’s continuous support. She highlighted the government’s priorities and opportunities for collaboration in renewable energy, electricity, port development, infrastructure, industrial zones, minerals, and natural resources. Al-Zuba emphasized Yemen’s view of China as a vital developmental and strategic partner, assuring readiness to coordinate all aspects of cooperation.
In response, Zhao Cheng announced that the Chinese government would provide a new development grant of 15 million Chinese Yuan to support reconstruction and development efforts in Yemen. Arrangements for signing the agreement with the ministry will follow.
Zhao also noted that China has granted Yemen complete customs exemptions for all Yemeni products exported to China. This move aims to boost trade and open new avenues for Yemeni exporters. He highlighted that this year marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Furthermore, China will host the second Arab-Chinese summit, and Zhao expressed hope for high-level Yemeni participation.
Zhao reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Yemen in various ways, including reconstruction efforts and expanding scholarship and training programs in technology, medicine, agriculture, and public administration.
This meeting underscores the growing partnership between Yemen and China, focusing on mutual development and cooperation in various sectors.
